The Eygoutier is a small river which flows 15 km in Cell Phone Accessories the Mediterranean, in the great harbor of Toulon. In its journey from Toulon, it is called the beautiful name of “River of Love” in fact the etymology has nothing to do with love, it is a corruption of “riviero deis love (love = mulberry trees, the river was formerly a part of its course, lined with mulberry trees ). It serves as a rack at its source in a place called the Estagnol in The Sheep ( La Crau ).
The two harbors, large and small , are separated by a dam built in the xix th century by the engineers of the Navy and the convicts. In the small harbor , there is the arsenal and the port of Toulon, and the basis of diving schools in the marine St. Mandrier, various fortifications, the scientific basis of IFREMER in La Seine, parks fish and the site of Tamaris, which was a fashionable resort in the xix th century, launched by Michel Pacha and attended among others by George Sand and Frederic Chopin . The naval base of Toulon was the first military port of France. This is particularly the port of the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle . It houses other warships, and part of the submarine nuclear (submarine attack SNA). It stretches the limits of the city of Seyne-sur-Mer to the limit of civil port of Toulon. This is an important center for repair and maintenance of ships. The eleven pools refit were built for that. The two largest (422 meters by 40) were constructed by winning over the sea, the work lasted from 1911 to 1927 . It is in these basins that IPER (Periodicals unavailability for maintenance and repair, that is to say the planned interventions of longer than one year) are conducted to maintain the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle and other major warships.
Since 1800, the city has a maritime prefecture . The maritime prefect is also currently the Commander for the Mediterranean (CECMED).
Prefect of the city until 1851, the Baron Haussmann’s ambition was to restructure Toulon. Due to time constraints, Haussmann did not intervene directly and expressed its views to Napoleon III. It was not until 1852 that the Emperor moves to Toulon and orders the commencement of work. But Haussmann will still follow the expansion of the city. At Toulon, unlike Paris, very little has been destroyed (outside the walls), it was mainly confined to enlarge the old center by turning back the campaign and creating the High City. Thus, it endows Toulon major boulevards and other avenues. The first will be the descendant of the new Station (Vauban Avenue) to the Place Royale (now Place d’Armes). It also traces the Boulevard de Strasbourg (formerly Boulevard Napoleon III) and Leon Feuchère realize the Opera in the city. It has 1750 seats in 1862 and is the most important Italian opera Plastic Containers in France. Charles Garnier will make his prototype for the Opera in Paris that will develop the same year. The southern part of the center (low or Old Town) is characterized by a maze of narrow streets, crossings, walkways, shady squares dating back to medieval times. The old town is a semi-pedestrian area of 23 hectares between the Boulevard de Strasbourg (north), the Rue de la République (south), the Cours Lafayette (east), the Place d’Armes ( in the West). Note the quay and the port of Kronstadt that are of some interest to tourists. The buildings in the front of the port (from the reconstruction immediately after the war), as well as the neighborhood of Port-Marchand (and the building of the Savings Bank located on the Place de la Liberté) are classified as “heritage the xx th century “since 2007.
Before the colonization Roman , Telo Martius (from Telo : the goddess Ligurian sources – or Latin tolus : ski hill – and Martius : Latin god of war Ares in Greek) was a safe vessel Greek cross between Massalia and Olbia, and fishery murex , large sea snail used to dye the robes . Ligurians, Celts and Greeks commercèrent then confronted them, until they do appeal to Rome which, after several campaigns against the Celto-Ligurians, annex the region (since called Provincia : Provence ) in the year 120 BC.
Telo Martius becomes one couettes of the two dye imperial purple , natural color red, through the exploitation of Murex and scale insects of Kermes oak , so dominant in its territory.
Point Break of merchant vessels, Telo and Tholon , Tolon , Tolon strives to protect this exceptional frequently plundered by pirates and Saracens (but also in times of scarcity, based maritime expeditions of plunder to the east or south of the western Mediterranean …). After the annexation of Provence in France, Toulon is a place of shipbuilding (under Charles VIII ) and its harbor is used to house military fleets.
Old Regime and Revolution

The Toulon squadron to maneuver in 1777, shortly before the outbreak of the War of American Independence .
Vauban fortified the city of Toulon squadron receiving the Mediterranean Louis XIV . Toulon is with Brest , the only port capable of receiving large ships of war on the xvii th and xviii th centuries. The latter, which are heavier because of the weight more and more of their artillery, require drafts increasingly important, or 7 m after 1680. The site is even better than that of Brest under prevailing westerly winds, which makes it difficult to exit wings . Toulon is not the problem, but the Mediterranean is a sea almost closed, and in case of war, the squadron from Toulon to circumvent Spain to join that of Brest , which is time consuming. After 1704, there is the risk of being detected and attacked by British forces in Gibraltar during the transition in the Atlantic, as was the case in 1758 and 1759 during the Seven Years’ War .
A penal colony settled there, sleeping on the HDMI switch condemned old ships dismasted, and working on the ground during the day (not all were chained) and others (subject to severe penalties) were assigned to the convict galleys royal at the very high mortality. At the end of sentence, many remained in the region.
In 1707 Victor Amadeus II of Savoy attack the city, blocked vessels C. Showell, in July and the fleet is scuttled. The night between 22 and 23 August the Savoyards retreat to Nice.
Toulon was the place of departure and arrival of most major military expeditions and colonial French to Africa during the Old Regime and the xix th century, for example, the Egyptian expedition , led by Napoleon Bonaparte , sailed from Toulon on 19 May 1798 . Bonaparte had also earned his stripes as Brigadier General, 22 December 1793 , after the Siege of Toulon and its reconquest by the revolutionary armies. The city was opened to the English Royalist by the fraction of its inhabitants. It would be débaptisée by the National Convention which, by decree of 4 Nivose Year II (December 24, 1793), stated: “The name of infamous Toulon is deleted. This town will be renamed Port-la-Montagne ” .
The question arose whether Toulon had been “punished for his betrayal” by the fact that the seat of the prefecture is not attributed to him in 1800, when creating the prefects. The argument of a personal grudge against Toulon Bonaparte justifying this transfer is not acceptable, not only Toulon had to first become a major naval port, but it should be noted that two other major French military ports had not received either, at the same time, the status of prefecture. And Cherbourg was a sub-prefecture (prefecture of the Channel is attributed to Saint Lô), as well as Brest (Finistère prefecture of returning to Quimper). Toulon is that a sub-prefecture was not, as such, a historical aberration and administration.
The permutations of the Navy with the arsenal of Brest also create a community of Brittany .
World War II

Scuttling of the French fleet in Toulon in 1942.
Severely tested during the Second World War ( scuttling of the fleet on 27 November 1942 before the occupation of Germany, bombing U.S. from 24 November 1943 ), Toulon was liberated on 23 August 1944 by the army B 10 and particularly by the 1 re DB 11 , consisting mainly of Europeans in North Africa and North Africans , commanded by General de Lattre de Tassigny .
From 1945 to 2000
After the war, the devastated port to be rebuilt, and many homes destroyed, over at the end of the war in Algeria , the influx of Translation Services Blackfoot driven from their homes requires the rapid construction of new housing: around the old city, which is deteriorating, then rise of new family housing neighborhoods. ” Little Chicago “was after World War II the nickname of a bad part of town at the bottom of the old town, just outside the main gate of the arsenal. This nickname was given by the fishermen, which did much to establish the bad reputation of the city in the year 1950 .
The city regained its status Prefecture in November 1974.
From the year 1970 Toulon experienced strong economic and social abandonment, and faces various problems. A high unemployment rate, development of a particular crime in the city right in disrepair, a road traffic congestion related to the poor of the city motorway access, management affairs of the city, especially under the mandate of the Mayor Maurice Arreckx , contribute to the victory of the National Front car insurance in the municipal elections of 1995 , governing the city until 2001 .
xxi th century: an inevitable mutation
At the beginning of xxi th century , Toulon seeks to improve its image and emerge as a true regional center, through a revaluation of its historic center, improved communications infrastructure and economic development.
In 2001 , the incumbent mayor and former frontist Jean-Marie Le Chevallier was defeated by Hubert Falco . The latter involves a sharp reduction in charges of city debt to the tune of 214 million euros, is undertaking the rehabilitation of Toulon and the old center and set up with the eleven municipalities surrounding urban community Toulon Provence Méditerranée on 31 December 2001 to carry the major projects of the city of Toulon.
In December 2009 Toulon received the Marianne d’Or for Sustainable Development for its commitment to modern and innovative actions that participates in the local development of the town 12 .
The University of Toulon has existed since 1968 . Its main site Cell Phone Accessories is formed by the Campus Guard , located about 15 km east of Toulon. It includes nearly 10,300 students. Toulon also has three engineering schools : the Higher Institute of Electronic and digital (ISEN Toulon), the Institute of Engineering Sciences of Toulon and Var (ISITV) and Supméca Toulon . Overall, higher education is relatively undeveloped in Toulon. The city only about 15 000 students, while Bordeaux , Montpellier and Rennes in count 60 000. It did not of Institute of Political Studies, unlike other major cities in France ( Toulouse , Grenoble , Lille , Strasbourg , Aix-en-Provence …) or Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy or school of architecture . However it has a school of fine arts and an International School of Design. This insufficient supply certainly undermines the competitiveness and attractiveness of the city and the department but it is only logical reflection on the one hand, policy choices that were made ??in the past, and also , the narrow geography of Toulon, which led to a university outside Toulon. Proximity to major universities in size to Marseille, Aix and Nice only amplifies this fact by draining potential students out of Toulon.
